There is a lot more to designing or creating the perfect kitchen than initially meets the eye.
However, if you are thinking about installing a new kitchen then there are a number of considerations you need to make and providing you follow some very basic principles you will find that the kitchen you create is one that is beautiful and functional.
Here’s my top 10 tips that should really help you.
Think carefully about the layout you want for your kitchen. One of the most practical solutions is to take a trip to your local Kitchen Showroom with your measurements in hand and let them produce a computer generated layout for you.
Bet you didn’t know… Modern kitchen layouts actually take their inspiration from the 1950′s production line layout.
The ideas, as you’ll see from the video below, was to create an efficient workspace that minimized the amount of traveling around the space in order to perform a particular task.

Worktops – When it comes to work tops you need to carefully consider the materials that you want to use. For example while a natural wooden worktop will look stunning it will take a lot of looking after.
Granite on the other hand is almost maintenance free and looks incredible but you will have to factor this into your budget as granite work tops can be very expensive.
Many people now choose laminate worktops as these are a cheap alternative and are extremely durable and of course come is a variety of finishes to mimic wood or granite.
Kitchen Appliances – These items are always going to cut deep into your overall budget but the rule of thumb here is not to skimp on the quality. Try to allocate as much of the budget you can here as the better the quality the more likely they are to last longer.
Think carefully about the kitchen appliance energy rating. You may find that kitchen appliance with high energy rating cost a little more but you will find the energy savings worth this cost as you will be saving money on your energy bills.
Storage and utility rooms
Storage and utility rooms – Storage space always seems to run out quickly and one great way to increase the storage space in your kitchen is to move certain appliances, such as the washing machine and dryer, to the utility room.
You could take this a step further and actually move the dishwasher, but remember this will decrease the efficiency of the work space, although it does free up a lot of space for additional storage.
When visiting your local kitchen showroom do check out the space and storage saving devices. Designers have come up with some brilliant and innovative ways to save space while increasing the possible storage space.
Keeping the Kitchen Sociable
Remember that the kitchen is the heart of the home for many families. It is a great place for everyone to come together and spend some quality time together. Try to create the kitchen that fits the needs of you and your family.
You need to ensure that the type of flooring you choose compliments the kitchen units that you choose. There are lots of different types of flooring available and in a multitude of colors and designs, from laminate floors to floor tiles, wood flooring and natural stone floors.
It is possible to lay carpeting in a kitchen, although I would never recommend this for hygiene purposes. Other types of flooring, such as tiles or laminate flooring is much easier to maintain and keep clean.
This really comes back to storage space and I would always recommend creating a space where recycling can take place.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort to recycle but it does make a huge difference to the environment you live in so make the effort and before a little greener in the kitchen.
Why waste the waste?… Remember that your vegetable and fruit peelings can be used in your compost bin and making your own compost is a great way to produce your own organic food so why waste it by throwing it in the bin… Recycle it!
When it comes to lighting your kitchen the obvious is always the ceiling lights and many people like to install strip spot lights so that the light can be focused on certain areas of the kitchen – this is a great idea, but you can also include lighting under the wall units that will light the counter tops where you are working.
Ask your kitchen designer about lighting options and you will be amazed at what is available.
Keep it Green – remember to think about the energy you use in the kitchen and install energy efficient bulbs!
These are highly practical as they are so hygienic. You can fit a splashback from a number of materials including, which is very popular, from tiles.
These are so easy to keep clean and a simple wipe down once you’ve finished cooking keeps your kitchen looking wonderful.
Deep storage drawers
Yes, back to storage again, and by now you’ll know just how important storage space is in the kitchen. Consider units that have very deep draws that will allow you to put all your pots and pans in.
The alternative is to hang these above the work island and while this can look effective in country style kitchens it may not look so great if you want to create a minimalist kitchen design.
Well that’s it from me, do take a look at the video below – it basically covers the tips here and provides a little extra information that should really help you in designing a kitchen that is perfect for you and your family.
